In a somewhat surprising move, the NAACP passed a historic resolution endorsing marriage equality. President and CEO Benjamin Jealous made the following statement: “Civil marriage is a civil right and a matter of civil law. The NAACP’s support for marriage equality is deeply rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution and equal protection of all people.” Although the endorsement carries no specific legislative weight, the significance of the largest and arguably best known civil rights organization in the nation making such an endorsement can’t be ignored, particularly since there has been such disparity in polling numbers between the black community and the community at large when asked about marriage equality. Opposition among blacks is often attributed to black churches. The text of the NAACP’s resolution addresses that opposition in a somewhat roundabout way: “The NAACP Constitution affirmatively states our objective to ensure the “political, educational, social and economic equality” of all people. Therefore, the NAACP has opposed and will continue to oppose any national, state, local policy or legislative initiative that seeks to codify discrimination or hatred into the law or to remove the Constitutional rights of LGBT citizens. We support marriage equality consistent with equal protection under the law provided under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Further, we strongly affirm the religious freedoms of all people as protected by the First Amendment.” Read more about this: NAACP Press Release New York Times: In Largely Symbolic Move, N.A.A.C.P. Votes to Endorse Same-Sex Marriage

Cue “”O Fortuna” from Carmina Burana. Maybe they’ll use the “Dies Irae” from the Verdi Requiem again. Does it matter? The presumptive GOP nominee and his minions are already ratcheting up the frightening rhetoric, with all the ginned-up drama they can muster. The buzz yesterday was around the super PAC headed by TD Ameritrade billionaire Joe Ricketts and, specifically, around a leaked storyboard for an ad that the super PAC wanted to run. The ad blames the foreclosure crisis on Obama, holds him solely responsible for the national debt, and reintroduces the scare tactics of the 2008 campaign. (Never mind that the foreclosure crisis was precipitated by unregulated banking, that the federal debt is largely because of two unfunded wars coupled with Bush-era tax cuts, and that the campaign scare tactics didn’t work. Facts don’t matter to super PACs.) Romney quickly attempted to distance himself from that ad, in his inimitable fumble-prone way. But check out the pictures that are posted on another Romney super PAC web site. Here’s a personal favorite, complete with lightning bolts, a scowling dark face, and the implicit attribution of the federal debt: Of course, that other super PAC ad referred to “the grin,” using that as an indicator of Obama’s lack of trustworthiness. So I guess a president just shouldn’t be allowed to have a face. Or at least facial expressions. And check out this tribute to Goofus and Gallant, from the same site: “Barack is dark and scary, and he’s surrounded by ominous-looking smoke. He points! And he probably runs with scissors. Mitt is sweet, passive, and docile. He wears a tie, and he doesn’t use any frightening gestures.” We can expect Rush Limbaugh to have the dance remix of “Barack the Magic Negro” on the air any day now. I guess it’s not surprising that these attacks, replete with thinly-veiled racism, are happening. Obama has been subject to this kind of hateful rhetoric since before he was elected. What is still surprising to me, however, is that people are dumb enough to fall for it.

“I’m not familiar with precisely what I said, but I stand by what I said, whatever it was.” - Mitt Romney, May 17, 2012 What Romney said about Obama and Rev.
Speaker of the House John Boehner has gained the reputation for allowing the most extreme elements of the Republican Party to control the agenda in the House. And while he tries his damnedest to put up a good public front, it’s less and less believable. His latest public statement was made in relation to what appears to be another politically motivated debt ceiling battle: “I’m not threatening default.” But in the same speech, he ominously and erroneously claims that “the largest tax hike in American history is scheduled for the end of this year.” No, John. At the end of the year, the tax cuts that were put in place by a Republican administration ten years ago are set to expire. Those are the very same tax cuts that significantly contributed to the very debts and deficits that Boehner and the GOP/Tea Party claim to be so vehemently opposed to. But facts are troubling things to the GOP. It’s much easier to claim – through Speaker Boehner and others – that they’re don’t want to threaten default, all the while threatening default by bringing up all the same things they used to threaten default with before. And while approval numbers for Congress are at an all-time low, most people blame the Republicans for the legislative brinksmanship that led us to the edge of the precipice and that was responsible for the lowering of federal bond ratings with Standard and Poors. The consequences of that maneuvering are well known; our economy took a significant unnecessary hit If one were of a cynical frame of mind, and I have often been rightfully accused of that, one might think that this is political maneuvering in an effort to precipitate another hit to the economy, just in time to conjure up more “proof” that Obama is bad for the economy.
