What’s the Spanish Word for ‘Verklempt’?
Nov 7th
It’s hard not to get choked up watching the rescue of the Chilean miners. The video images say it all, so I’m not going to try to comment. I’ll let the emotion of the moment speak for itself.
What I will comment about is the technology that’s involved in this rescue. We’ve learned to take so much for granted in this day and age, but I’ve been thinking what this rescue attempt would have been like even 10 or 20 years ago. Think of it:
- The miners have had audio and video contact with loved ones, medical personnel, and counselors on the surface through much of the time they have been trapped.
- We had live international video feed from within the mine so that the world could watch as the first rescue worker entered the mine and the first miner was raised to the surface.
- The world has tweeted about this event over the past several weeks and it’s unlikely that anyone in the world hasn’t learned something about these trapped men as the result of our techology.
Next time I’m cursing about how much faster our lives have gotten as the result of too much technology, perhaps I’ll have a moment of gratitude for what all that geek stuff has provided during these events.
A Snapshot of Gay History
Sep 30th
Despite the progress that has been made in the struggle for the equality of GLBT Americans, these past couple of weeks provide a stunning reality check:
- A Senate defense authorization bill is filibustered by Republicans because it included the provision that would have overturned the U.S. military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. Republicans choose to indulge in their bigotry (either for its own sake or for some sense of political advantage) rather than fund the very troops they claim to be so supportive of.
- A gay blogger gets a not-so-veiled death threat posted in his comments; a little investigation reveals that the threat comes from the office of one of the Senators who championed the filibuster that blocked the passage of that Senate bill.
- A 13-year-old self-identified gay boy in Texas commits suicide by shooting himself in the head after seemingly endless bullying by his classmates at school.
- A talented young violinist leaps from the George Washington Bridge to his death after the public humiliation he faced after his college roommate broadcasts the man’s private gay sexual encounter on the internet.
- A 15-year-old boy in Indiana hangs himself after merciless anti-gay taunting by fellow students.
- A 13-year-old boy in California dies after an extended period on life support following hanging himself. He had been subjected to bullying and teasing about his sexual orientation.
- An Ohio boy has his arm broken by the football players on the team for which has become a cheerleader. The football players continue to threaten him because he has reported the injury to authorities.
- An Assistant Attorney General in Michigan
continuesescalates his bizarre campaign against the openly gay student body president, picketing outside the young man’s home, blogging obsessively about his activities, and appearing on national TV, apparently to extend the scope of his insanity. Michigan’s Attorney General (so far) defends the Assistant AG’s actions and refuses to terminate his employment. - Another ardent right-wing homophobe, Bishop Eddie Long, is accused of taking sexual advantage of his young male parishioners under the guise of mentorship and pastoral counseling. (While all the facts on this have not yet come out, there are now four young men who have come forward with similar highly plausible stories.)
We might still have some work to do. I’m just sayin’.
A Regrettable Incident & A “Regretful” Choice of Words
Sep 18th
The video of the incident in which a student was tasered while speaking out at a University of Florida campus forum for John Kerry has been plastered all over the news channels today (as well as YouTube):
The incident and the video that captures it are disturbing on so many levels.
First and foremost on the disturbing list is the fact that this student, Andrew Meyers, is so clearly detained, tasered and arrested merely for exercising his First Amendment rights. Is there a reason why a microphone was placed in the audience other than to capture questions and opinions from participants?
It’s also equally disturbing that John Kerry is heard on the video continuing to address the rest of the audience, while the police are dragging this student out. How quickly would the police have ceased their tactics had Kerry addressed them directly from the podium and asked them to leave Meyers alone? It was completely within Kerry’s power (if not his ability) to defuse the situation and he didn’t. Perhaps what we got from Kerry in this incident is what we should expect from candidate Kerry, who failed or refused to address the tough issues during his Presidential bid?
The fact that the police were so willing and ready to pounce is also pretty suspicious. In the video, it looks like there are at least seven cops surrounding Meyers. It’s absurd to think that seven cops can’t subdue someone who is merely yelling. He’s not fighting them, he’s not flailing, and he’s not resisting arrest. He’s merely begging them for a reason why he’s not being allowed to speak and, then, begging them not to taser him.
Add to this increasingly disturbing list the fact that several of Meyers’ fellow students — their brains apparently turned to Alpo from overdoses of “Jackass” and “Girls Gone Wild” — can be seen laughing as the cops are zapping Meyers. These dimwits apparently didn’t get to the part in their American History books about Kent State. (Am I crazy to have higher expectations of higher education?)
Here’s the kicker. The media, who have the most to lose in this deterioration of the First Amendment, seem to be perfectly content to camp out outside O.J.’s jail cell (both physically and metaphorically), apparently reminiscing about the good old days of Camp O.J., and determined to provide wall-to-wall coverage of this non-essential story.
One final (and admittedly more trivial) level of “disturbing” is that, when the University’s President J. Bernard Machen spoke out today, is that he referred to the incident as “regretful.” Clearly, he was never an English major. It’s regrettable that a university president doesn’t know the difference between “regretful” and “regrettable.”
Bam!
Jun 10th
Bam! There’s always something happening on Sunset Boulevard. Here, Rick Fox backs his Range Rover into a BMW in the drive-through line at In-N-Out Burger:

This was one of the funniest displays of human nature that I’ve seen in a long time.
Here’s what went down. A big old Range Rover is in the drive-through line in front of a black BMW. The Range Rover backs up without looking and slams into the front of the BMW. The driver of the BMW throws up his hands in anger, gets out of the car, and starts storming toward the Range Rover. Meanwhile, the driver of the Range Rover gets out and, in an instant, the mood of the BMW driver changes from rage to surprise to glee, as soon as he realized that the RR driver was Rick Fox. By the time I left, it looked like they were best friends.
Celebrity goes a long way in this town.
At Last, We Agree
Jun 29th
After more than two years in office, the W finally did something that I agree with. He signed into law and launched the national telemarketing ‘Do Not Call‘ law. It’s sort of out of character for a President who has proven himself to be so much on the side of business.
Do you think they’ve been getting calls in the Oval Office offering timeshares?
Right-Wing Hypocrisy Alert
May 6th
Also just had to weigh in about the hypocrisy of William “Virtue” Bennett and his penchant for high-stakes gambling. I think it’s appropriate for this bloated self-righteous old school fool to be exposed on the 50th anniversary of the HUAC hearings, the transcripts of which have been released this week. It’s not difficult to see the parallels.
Both Bennett and Joseph McCarthy professed loudly and publicly that they knew what was best for America and for Americans, all the while living a totally hypocritical secret life. If these fat losers didn’t wield such power, it would be comedic.
Now that the truth is out, it’s hard to find anyone who will defend McCarthy. But Bennett supporters are still out in force. Is it going to take fifty years before people will realize that he’s just as much of a fraud as McCarthy?
Keepin’ It Surreal
Apr 15th
I’ve heard people say that Las Vegas is the most surreal place on earth. But I just spent the weekend in Palm Springs, and I beg to differ.
Las Vegas has no sham about what it is — a place to indulge in all those things that you’re not supposed to do, like drinking, gambling, going to titty bars, eating bad food, smoking indoors.
